The Pocatello Area
The Pocatello area was originally settled by the Shosoni and Bannock peoples; in the area that runs along the Portneuf river, until the arrival of Europeans in the 1800’s. A trading post was established in 1834 by a fur trader named Nathanial Jarvis Wyeth. It would become a vital stop on the Oregon Trail after Hudson’s Bay Company acquired the post.
In 1860, gold was discovered in Idaho, which drew herds of U.S. settlers to the area. The city of Pocatello is named after the Shoshoni chief who granted permission to build a railroad across the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, which sits west of Pocatello. As a result, Pocatello played an important role during the gold rush as a stop on the first railroad in Idaho. Ironically, the Pocatello chief after whom the city is named, believed the name had no meaning and preferred to be called Tondzaosha, which means buffalo robe.
Following the gold rush, Pocatello became a significant agricultural center; attracting permanent residents to the area in the profession of ranchers and farmers; a turning point that marks the beginning of residential and commercial development.
Pocatella was declared the U.S. Smile Capital, nearly 40 years after the 1948 passing of an unconventional ordinance that required anyone in Pocatello to smile. A severe winter that brought down the city spirit is what prompted the unusual law and it was never repealed.
